Song-A-Day: Charlie Darwin

"Charlie Darwin" by The Low Anthem. Saw these guys open for Mumford and Sons about a year ago - really nice mixture of folk and honky-tonk.

Song-A-Day: Mobius Trip

"Mobius Trip" by H.P. Lovecraft - the 60's psychedelic band, not the influential horror writer.

Song-A-Day: Will The Circle Be Unbroken

"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" cover by Cordelia's Dad. I first became aware of Tim Eriksen through the soundtrack for Cold Mountain. Turns out he had a fairly revolutionary folk/punk band called Cordelia's Dad back in the 80's/90's. You should check them out.

Sunday Review: Body Double (1984)

In which we learn that, if someone ever offers you a chance to house-sit a luxurious high-rise in L.A., you should probably not take them up on it…

Song-A-Day: Forensic Shimmy

Someone had the brilliant idea to mix the Wu Tang Clan with Fugazi, and then someone else had the even more brilliant idea to put that over a montage of kung fu movies.

    Thus, "Forensic Shimmy" by Wugazi.

Cult Thursdays: High Road to China (1983)

It must be Brian G. Hutton week, as we take a look at the very last movie the director ever made...

Song-A-Day: The Wrong Door

"The Wrong Door" by The Black Belles. Further proof that, if a band has the word "black " in their name, I'm almost guaranteed to like them (except for the Black Eyed Peas - but they do not exist in this dojo).

Song-A-Day: Ten Million Slaves

"Ten Million Slaves" by Otis Taylor. You may remember this one from Public Enemies - it was used heavily in the promotion for that film.

Classic Tuesdays: Where Eagles Dare (1968)

They say Clint kills more people in this movie than in all his other movies combined. And they’re all Nazis!

Song-A-Day: Where Eagles Dare

Since I'll be reviewing the movie later, today's song is "Where Eagles Dare" by Iron Maiden, which the band wrote as a tribute to the film. Iron Maiden always sings about stuff that's of interest to me - Piece of Mind, the album from which the song comes, has tracks referencing everything from Frank Herbert's Dune ("To Tame a Land") to Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" ("The Trooper").

Song-A-Day: Mother Nature's Son

As the years go on, my respect for Jack White only grows. Not only does he form his own band and label to put out his music; not only does he form a super-group, and then one more for good measure... He's probably the only musician of his generation with a singular, distinct voice. So much so that he can silence a room filled with everyone from the President to Sir Paul McCartney with his rendition of McCartney's own "Mother Nature's Son." In a musical landscape slipping further and further into mediocrity (and if we're being honest, it's been well past mediocre for a while now), he's worth his weight in gold.

    God bless Jack White.

Song-A-Day: Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Today we have the stoner classic from Monster Magnet, "Negasonic Teenage Warhead." A lot of the band's recent output has sounded a little same-y to me, but Dopes to Infinity (the album from which this song comes) is still a classic.

Dave Wyndorf's put on some pounds, yeah? Not exactly a bad thing, as his extra girth seems to have given his voice a little more oomph.

Cult Thursdays: Norwegian Ninja (2010)

   “This hot dog is best.”

Song-A-Day: Death Letter

Here is probably one of the last filmed performances of blues legend Son House, recorded for the BBC in 1970. House had to quit performing live soon after, no longer able to play due to an onset of Parkinson's disease. He was already succumbing to it's effects by the time this was filmed, and you can tell: there's a stiffness to his movements, and his fingers don't always hit the right strings. But watching him power through it and still manage to deliver a great performance is kind of moving. It never ceases to amaze me what a great performer can do with just a guitar and their voice.

Song-A-Day: Wolf & I

Today's song comes from Danish musician Oh Land. I can't say that any of her other songs do a whole lot for me, but this has a nice sound to it, with her haunting voice and the hip-hop drum track.

Classic Tuesdays: River of No Return (1954)

Attempted rape is just another way of saying, "I love you..." Wait- what?

Song-A-Day: Body Movin'

Since we lost Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch last week to cancer, it's only fitting to pick a Beastie Boys track for today's Song-A-Day.

Yauch was not only just a talented musician - he was quite an accomplished filmmaker as well, directing several of the Beastie Boys' videos under the name Nathaniel Hornblower. I chose the video "Body Movin'" not just because of the obvious Danger: Diabolik parallels (the background image of this site being from the same film), but because it shows off Yauch's chops as a filmmaker. He was a huge fan of Diabolik, and nails the aesthetic of director Mario Bava and 60's spy cheese brilliantly in the video above. And the song's pretty good, too.

Song-A-Day: It Was There (That I Saw You)

Welcome to the first installment of Song-A-Day, a daily feature where I highlight songs that are currently doing it for me. Offbeat, indie, mainstream - you'll see songs of all shapes and sizes. Today we have "It Was There (That I Saw You)," my favorite track from Source Tags & Codes, the third album from ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - one of the best albums of the last decade, and probably one of the best alternative rock albums ever made.

Fair warning: the drums here will ruin most other rock bands for you.
