Stream-And-Run: Impasse (1969)

How can you possibly screw up a movie pairing Honey West with Gator?

NOTE: Netflix is taking down virtually all of their MGM titles on May 1st, so I thought it might be fun to see how many I can watch in the next two weeks, and then post quick, little hit-and-run reviews here. Hope you enjoy, and if you want to see any of these movies and have Netflix, better watch ’em now!

Burt Reynolds and Anne Francis headline this mostly forgettable affair, which concerns Reynolds as a salvage man who hires a team of war veterans to find an old stash of WWII gold in the Phillipines. It’s a plot ripe for a rip-roaring adventure film, but the script meanders so much that the hunt for the gold (the supposed main thrust of the plot) doesn’t really factor into the movie until the last third - the film instead focusing on “comedic” subplots that are anything but. A shame, as seeing a young Burt Reynolds gallivanting about town, charming women and getting into scrapes is quite a lot of fun. But whatever charms the movie contains come as too little, too late - as does Reynolds’ non-chemistry with Francis and his heavily-stereotyped crew.
