Stream-And-Run: She (1982)

Grab your swords, thongs and hair bleach; it's 80's fantasy time...

NOTE: Netflix is taking down a boatload of titles on May 1st, so I thought it might be fun to see how many I can watch in the next two weeks, and then post quick, little hit-and-run reviews here. Hope you enjoy, and if you want to see any of these movies and have Netflix, better watch ’em now!

Based on the H. Rider Haggard story in name only, She is a mishmash of post-apocalyptic and barbarian settings. The story concerns two lunk-heads out to rescue their sister from a band of especially nasty warriors called the Nurks, and enlisting the help of the barbarian goddess She and her army of warrior women along the way. Sandahl Bergman appears in the title role, fresh off her success in Milius’ Conan the Barbarian, but doesn’t fair quite as well here, I’m sad to say. Of course, compared to her dull costars, she’s a regular Olivier, but the film is far too scattershot to develop any sense of itself. Our band of merry warriors stumble around from one crazy cult to the next, making the film seem like a string of vignettes rather than a single story. And although it contains hippie werewolfs, telepathic god cults, warrior women and tutu-wearing giants, the budget severely hampers most of the excitement. Still, there’s a pretty cheesily fantastic score by Rick Wakeman, Motorhead and Justin Heyward, and it all comes together in an admittedly great climax. In the end, the film falls somewhere between Yor and Krull - not exactly high praise, but far from the worst of the genre.
