Do you like meta movies?
In
Scream 2, Wes Craven continues the
devilish fun he started with the first film - you can almost hear the director
cackling off-screen as he gleefully subverts horror tropes, the mass media and
Hollywood. Craven holds nothing back, even willing to poke fun at his own
previous film in the process. Whereas the first
Scream had comedic elements,
Scream
2 is virtually a full-bore horror-comedy, as evidenced by the absolutely
bonkers ending. Which is not to say that the film is without chills - there’s
an unbearably tense moment where
Scream heroine
Sydney Presscott must escape from a wrecked car by crawling over a passed-out
Ghostface. With the perfect blend of horror elements and bitingly sharp genre
satire and exploitation (such as the gret opening murder at the premiere of the
movie-within-a-movie
Stab),
Scream 2 is every bit as effective as the
first.
